A blog by an Irishwoman, written in both English and Swedish, depending on what humour is on me....
Just scroll down to find the English bits among the Swedish, or vice versa.

Ta Gaeilge agam freisin, más é an rud é go bhfuil éinne eile le Gaeilge ag léamh mo bhlagsa.

Wondering about the background of the blog? They're the Cliffs of Moher, in the neighbouring county, County Clare, 8km long, 700m high, and magnificent. Well worth a visit if anyone is around the West of Ireland

Hi all, we went to see Alice in Wonderland on Tuesday, I enjoyed it and so did the 7 children I had with me! The benefits or disadvantages of an 8 seater van!
I really like Johnny Depp, he was a very good Mad Hatter. Helena Bonham Carter was excellent as a bossy belligerent Red Queen and Anne Hathaway was otherworldly as the White Queen. Mia Wasikowska was Alice, striking and independent!
On Wednesday the girls went to pony camp, I only have a borrowed picture, cos all the ponies were back in their stables when I got there, we had a very heavy shower at that time.
Their site is here http://www.childrensponyparties.com/

Today Thursday, we went to visit my sister and her children, the cousins had a great time together.
Now the 2 eldest girls are at a match and I'm taking a breather before I go collect them, if I stay and watch the whole match, I run the risk of losing my voice if I start to shout them on.
just about to head out the door now.
A bit of music to see me on my way,

a birthday, a christening and a seaside walk, födelsedag, dop och havet

Christening
This weekend, we went to Cork for the christening of my sister's baby daughter. It was a lovely day on Saturday and we left Limerick a bit early so we could get to the sea before the christening. The drive to Cork via Mitchelstown went really well, 1 hr and 20 mins on the new motorway.

Garryvoe Beach, pic borrowed from net, as husband's camera is not talking to my laptop tonight...

We got to Garryvoe beach, but the tide was in all the way to the rocks, so we didn't get to walk on the sand. The waves were wonderful to behold though and I stood and just listened to the wonderful rocking sound of pebbles rolling back when the waves retreated. The children ran off a bit of their pentup energy and played in the playground, till the sky began to fill with black clouds and fat raindrops began to fall. We scarpered to the car and headed to the church in Midleton.
The ceremony was lovely and then we drove a short distance to the Castlemartyr Hotel, where we were well fed and watered. We left Cork at around 8.30pm and got home at at 10.30.

Castlemartyr Resort Hotel, pic borrowed from web

Sunday passed in a blur of matches, 3 in all, soccer, camogie and Gaelic Football, and I slept like a log when I finally got to bed Sunday night.
Weather
Today, Monday, it has been raining all day, drizzly at times and downpours at times.
Just now when I logged on to write this post, I saw that my Weather widget for Limerick said 'Light Snow', and I thought to myself, 'well they got that wrong, but they can't always be right'. 3 minutes ago, my daughter came running down the stairs to say 'It's snowing!!!' So there, Weather widget was right! Big fat wet snowflakes!
The weather is set to be wet and very cold this week, with possible snow and frost in places. My heating will be going back on again. This house is quite economical on heat, a sunny day gives us lots of passive solar gain, but cold overcast days are not good from the 'free heat from the sun' point of view, so underfloor heating and storage heating are going back on tonight.
Birthday
Our second daughter had her 13th birthday on Saturday, the same day as the christening. She wanted a smoothie maker and she got one! So it's been smoothies every day since.
Easter holidays
Now we have 2 weeks off for Easter, a welcome break from the early mornings and from homework, uniforms, lunches, etc. The clocks went forward, there's an extra hour of brightness in the evenings, and the weather will be getting better, one hopes, as March and April pass. I can live in hope!
Good night to all who pop by in here, I've read all the blogs on my bloglist tonight, just wasn't inspired enough to write inspiring comments, but I'll be back...

Dopet
Min systerdotter döptes i Cork i lördags.
liz

naturälskare, I love Nature...

Lovely books, great for someone like me who enjoys knowing about clouds and weather...

Gökblomstret, Ragged Robin, Lychnis flos-cuculi, eller Silene flos-cuculi

Lychnis flos-cuculi, commonly called Ragged Robin, is a herbaceous perennial plant in the family Caryophyllaceae. It is species is native to Europe, where it is found along roads and in wet meadows and pastures. In Britain it has declined in numbers because of modern farming techniques and draining of wet-lands and is no longer common source Wikipedia

Gullviva, Cowslip, Primula veris

Primula veris (Cowslip) is a flowering plant in the genus Primula. The species is native throughout most of temperate Europe and Asia, and although absent from more northerly areas including much of northwest Scotland, it reappears in northernmost Sutherland and Orkney.

Hello to all who pop in here...
I'm not sure how many other mammies are like me, slowing down the car to point out an interesting bird to the children, birds like swans, herons flying with neck tucked in, or a hawk hovering above the motorway, with its prey in its sight below it... I am this kind of a mammy, regularly exclaiming about birds or wildflowers which are out of the usual, pointing out planets in the evening sky to my kids, or interesting cloud formations...
No wonder my husband has given me these books as presents - The Cloudspotter's Handbook, and The Pig with Six Legs, see above...
I get very curious about Nature, maybe this comes from my mum, who was like me a teacher, and who is still a very curious, energetic and positive person, she taught us lots about Nature in school.
Today on my way home from work, I saw what i think was a wild duck or goose, it had a long neck, and it had short ish wings, not to worry, the main point is I started thinking about the way that I seem to notice these things around me, and love to watch and observe Nature, when I can.
I generally have a pain in my neck after a long walk, cos I'll have been looking to the side at the grass verges to see what plants are growing there!
I am including these borrowed pics of 2 flowers here because I used to see these flowers in 2 separate local places and they have been damaged or destroyed, so I'm in mourning for them...
Let me explain, The Ragged Robin used to flower in a damp area near a local football pitch but the pitch has been developed this past year, and it looks like the area where they flower has been covered in sand and gravel. As they don't flower till the summer, I'll have to wait till then to see if they've survived or not. There were lots of them when they did flower, very impressive sight.
The cowslip is a flower I remember so well from my childhood. We used to pick bunches of them from the edges of the fields on my uncle's farm and make small round balls of flowers, how we did it I cannot recall, must ask my mum...
There were 2 strong plants of cowslips growing on a mossy ditch at the side of the road near where I now live, but, woe of woes, about 3 years ago, a farmer driving a huge tractor hit the ditch JUST where the cowslips were and they were destroyed. Yes it's a small thing I know, but I look out for them each spring since then, and they have definitely not survived the tractor episode, no sign of them. Not happy with said farmer...
I guess I can always buy Irish wild flower seeds and plant some in my own garden.

Ok in the meantime, here's another song from the early 80's, love it....

Hi, after a lovely day in Ireland, when the only blip was the rugby result against Scotland, I am here trying to embed a video from Youtube, it's one of my favourite songs from the early 1980's, Will You by Hazel O'Connor.
I hope this works
liz

PS It worked! all i had to do was copy and paste in the embed code from Youtube, was it really that easy?, feel a bit daft for asking!!! Thanks to Wiper and Tommy who both helped and to Lambergsfrua and Lily who got them to help me!

Another question, I've been told by 2 people that my blog does not open properly for them, and I wonder why.
First to tell me this was a Swedish lady who also blogs, but I cannot say what browser she uses, etc. She said it opened a bit, she could see the top of a brown house, but it wouldn't open any further than this. Not sure what error message she got either.
My husband tried to open my blog (for the first time ever, if you can't beat them, read them, I suppose) usng Internet Explorer and he also could see the house, but not much more.
Has anyone any idea why a Blogger- Blogspot blog wouldn't open for others? If it was web filters that were the problem surely the blog wouldn't even open to the house picture stage?

Regards and thanks
liz

Good to be alive, Gott att finnas till!

This working mum's St. Patrick's day: woke up at 7am, thinking about work, dozed till 10, that was my lie-in, then a nice breakfast, washed big pile of dishes, did 3 sets of laundry, had lunch and made a trip to local shop, washed floors, cleaned the bathroom and vacumned my car.... day not over yet, bit of work to do on computer... work tomorrow will be a nice rest...
Not that I'm feeling sorry for myself, au contraire, I'm delighted to have achieved so much today. It was a mild day, I believe it was the warmest day this year yet and a fine day to be cleaning, inside and out. There's always plenty of cleaning to do, the weekends go by so fast and I for one am always left with some housework that didn't get done at the weekend, so a day like today is a gift! Apologies to St Patrick but I bet women washed floors on 17th March in his day too....
My eldest daughter went to the parade in town with her friends. I'm not really a fan of big crowds and busy places, so I was more than pleased to be at home.
Now that I have a shiny bathroom and a car devoid of all the bits of dried mud and grass that falls off of daughters' football boots after tough training sessions and hard-fought matches, I feel that it really is soooo good to be alive!
I have a question, I'd like to know how to insert a video from Youtube into a blog message, and also how to have a link to a webpage or blog in a blog message. Anyone have the time to tell me, mas é bhur dtoil é?
Ta so much,
liz

pictures of Limerick Parade from the web, bilderna av kortege i Limerick lånade från nätet

Tack i förväg
liz

Happy St Patrick's Day

Happy St Patrick's Day to you all, near and far...
Enjoy the day, I know I will, starting with a long lie-in and a leisurely breakfast with the kids, hubby will be at work.
The weather is to be blustery, so no parades for me, I'm not a fan of crowds and noise.

St Patrick might not really have existed, my friend A in college studied History as her elective subject (I took Maths!) and it was from her we heard that Patrick's story was a conglomeration of the lives of a few different early missionary priests in Ireland, and that over time the stories had been merged, possibly in an attempt by one diocese to claim supremacy over another by virtue of being founded by THE St Patrick.
Nevertheless, we still tell our children the old stories about him, including the one where Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland. (The snakes never got to Ireland from the Continent in the first place! Sorry to be the bringer of bad news...)
I will enjoy tomorrow, cos all my children have a day off school, and so do I, bliss...

more maths and signs of Spring pics

Hi all, staying up here a bit late, I know, I'm catching up with maths again tonight, I don't want to fall behind (Update: yes, finally, I got that last one right! Yoo hoo, onto the next chapter...)

I went for a walk last Friday evening in Glenstal, a monastery and sceondary school near us, and took some pics, but it was dusk and the pictures are too grainy and also 'bleached' by the flash so I am borrowing some pics from the web to show what I wanted to show you instead...

celandines, a true sign of Spring

catkins on willows

a crocus or two

and finally these very tiny, very pretty outdoor cyclamens

Couldn't believe my eyes to see tiny red cyclamens just like this growing ion two patches under a tree in Glenstal, I will have to go back in better light to capture them on my own camera, in the meantime here is a borrowed shot from the web,
such a wonderful colour!
all signs of Spring, and it gladdens the heart!
Saint Patrick's Day in 2 days time, day off, to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland, It'll be nice just to have the day off, to relax...
here's some shamrock for you in honour of the day,

Good night for now, please do feel free to leave a comment on the blogg, I'd be delighted to hear from you!

go natt, må bra...

International Women's Day, Internationella Kvinnodagen

Happy International Women's Day, ladies! I feel like celebrating with a glass of red and a square of dark chocolate...

yesssss, i got that tricky maths question done and dusted!!!

Oh yes, after much blood sweat and tears, I finally got that tricky maths question sorted, derivatives and finding a local minimum... now I can finally go to bed, and look forward to the next chapter...(in maths and in work, etc!)
busy weekend, trying to keep on top of housework and laundry, and get the girls to their camogie training yesterday afternoon, and to a soccer match today, which they won 3 nil, thankfully. That group of girls have been training and playing together now for almost 4 years in soccer, camogie, Gaelic football and other assorted sports thay do at school, so they have really come on and all the match practice has made them not afraid of a tackle or a ball coming in at them! Glad to see all the hard work paying off, and great thanks is due to the coaches and mentors for always being there (and I mean always, hail, rain or snow!)
good night people,
a happy maths bunny....

a blog of two parts, tvådelad tvåspråkig blogg

a borrowed photo of Nissan Serena, which is the kind of car I drive, it has 8 seats and is great for getting half a camogie team to a match!

/>
a new purchase this weekend, a kettle, necessary for tea and hot water bottles!!!

using up some of my stash of yarn in this patch for Eilish Tuite's Art Project in Limerick, see the link on the right, and urbanknitlimerick on facebook.

and for my sins, some maths study to keep the brain cells ticking over!

So back at work and I'm surviving, but needless to say not able to blog as often as I'd like...
Last weekend the car developed a stiff steering wheel and the kettle died, so both items had to be either fixed (the car) or replaced (the kettle). Kettles are not as big as cars, but are very handy for tea and for filling hot waterbottles!
Above I've shown you a borrowed photo of a Nissan Serena, my car, which I dearly love, also a phoot of my new kettle. Kettles don't last long with us, cos of the lime in the water, but on the other hand, hard water is supposed to lead to lower incidence of heart disease, so the humans benefit, and one has to be grateful for any such advantages!
I'm delighted I started knitting again, knitting is great, it's so relaxing, I try to knit a bit just before i go to bed, great way to relax. At present I'm doing an A4 size patch for Eilish Tuite, an Art Student in Limerick, who is aiming to get 3000 patches, sew them together into large tapestries and hang the tapestries up behind glass in an empty office building in Liemrick. I'm glad to report that the patches will later be sewn into smaller blankets and donated to SVP, Limerick. Check out her link in list on the right or here:

I'm using up some of my stash of yarn in this way. I hope to knit a few more patches.

Lastly, the cover of my Maths book, trying to get time to move forward with this is a challenge this week, but not to worry, tomorrow is Friday, then it's the weekend.
Where does the time go?
I've been wondering about whether to separate the blog into two individual blogs, one Swedish and one English, does the bilingual aspect of it turn people off? Let me know, by all means. For now, I've gotten some positive feedback about it as it is, so I'll go with that! (Thanks, Lily)
Good night for now, wasn't it a lovely day today, I was on yard duty today and the kids on their break loved playing on the grass among the trees and rolling down the little hill... It's good to be alive!!!!
regards, live well, lev väl!
