How well-behaved is your snow?

The so-called Big Freeze continues, but really, the coldest temperature measured so far is minus 16C, which is nothing compared to Sweden.
Funnily enough, Ireland in my childhood used to be almost always snowfree, or at least most of Ireland. We got well-behaved snow, which fell overnight, ensured schools closed the following day and then had the good manners to melt during the day so we didn’t have to worry about icy roads etc… oh and this all used to happen on one day a year in maybe February or March, at least in the Southwest of the country, which is where I live….
However, last year’s 'cold snap' lasted 3 weeks and caused chaos, if it wasn’t snow that was the problem it was the frost that froze the last of the snow and made us Irish sit up and realise the need for gritting roads, and insulating water pipes correctly!
Now this year the cold and snow has come even earlier than last year, and we are once again struggling to deal with it. Last Thursday Dublin Airport was closed 3 times in the one day, as the snow was falling faster than they could clear the runway. Dublin suffered a combination of thunder and lightning and heavy snowfalls, and other parts of the East coast were also badly affected. At least this year the local authorities probably have enough salt and grit, and at least this time it's not the Christmas holidays when it's happening, like last year which really messed things up.

Honestly, we rarely gritted our roads before this, and we do not use studded/winter/all-weather tyres, why would we need to, snow only ever lasted until noon, on one day in, say, February...
[edited to add for clarification: I sincerely wish we did have winter tyres, and enough salt trucks and grit trucks to go around, and enough sand and salt for every schoolyard in the country ...]
So how well behaved is your snow? and how do you deal with it?

a few pictures at last, äntligen några bilder

The first photo is of the school which is right next to our house, the snow was pretty much as it had been all day, as the school was closed today, due to the weather/roads. I thought the light and the sky were lovely.
The other three show my daughter's 'snow fort', built by herself yesterday and today with the light powdery snow we got.
The builder herself is in there too, accompanied by her able assistant, her younger brother!
It was about 4.45 when i took these shots, so I had to brighten the one with the kids in it, so it wouldn't be too dark.


Kids stayed at home today, but tomorrow I think it'll be back to normal again.

Dessa bilder är tagna med min mya mobilen, tack o lov så har dottern en likadan, så jag behövde inte läsa manualen, utan frågade henne bara hur man gör för att föra över bilderna till min bärbara.

solen efter snön, sunshine after the snow,

We had a snowfall yesterday afternoon. I was at my sister's house all day with the children and there was no snow there. As i drove home the rain changed to sleet then chunky snowflakes and by the time I got home there was, amazingly, a few centimeters of snow on the ground. It looked lovely, and the kids went out for a little while in it. Needless to say it has all melted away now.
Two of the daughters are out rollerblading now on the deck in their shorts!



Dåså, ett till inlägg. Det var lite 'snöstorm' igår med irländskt mått mätt, jag var borta hos min syster och där var det ingen snö, på vägen hem såg jag hur det bara blev vitare och vitare på gräset och bilarna. Snart var vi inne i rena snöstorm, och kom hem till ett snötäckt hus.
Ingen fara, detta svenska hus klarar av kylan. Här drar det minsann inte! Stor tack till Scandinavian Homes, och killarna i Lysekil som tillverkade vårt hus åt oss!

Redan imorse höll snön på att töa, och nu är allt borta, kläderna hänger på tork i solen, barnen lekar och åker rullskridskor på altanen, två av dem i shorts.

Snö ikväll här i Limerick, inte så värst mycket, mindre än en centimeter, men det kommer nog att orsäka kaos igen på våra vägar, och inte minst på småvägarna, eftersom de förblir oplogade, ogrusade och osaltade....
Mycket diskussion här idag på radion om just detta med att kommunerna inte klarade av att salta/grusa vägarna tillräckligt ofta under julen, anses det, och då var folk tvungna att sitta hemma och vänta på att det skulle töa...

Egentligen är inte irländare förberedda för detta, det är kallare nu än det har varit på 40 år eller så, och så har kylan varat längre än vanligtvis. Det brukar töa samma dag här på Irland.

Enligt väderprognosen är det inte över än, det ska vara en vecka till...
Jodå jag pratar mycket om vädret! Jag tänker mycket på't oxå, barnen och mannen min ropar på mig när nyheterna är slut: 'Mamma kom och se på ditt program nu - nu är det vädret!!!' Annnars brukar jag aldrig se på TV.

Dåså, sovmorgon igen imorgon, barnen börjar inte skolan igen förran på torsdag.

Julsång i kyrkan Carol Service

Precis kommit hem från kyrkan i byn, där min 9-åriga dotter har varit med och sjungit julsånger med sina klasskamrater;
det var en s.k. Carol Service, där skolans barn sjöng och den lokala kören också sjöng julsånger;
mina barn blev jätteglada när de upptäckte att det snöade för fullt precis innan vi skulle åka till kyrkan; min man blev inte så glad, därför att han var tvungen att köra på våra smala krokiga vägar till kyrkan, drygt 6 km, inte så farligt, men värmlänningen min stressar upp sig lite över sånt...
nu fryser jag om fötterna, men ser fram emot en god och varm kopp tee (jag lärde mig aldrig dricka kaffe i Sverige), och nåt varmt o gott att äta...
här medföljer en bild på min 3åriga son, ute på altan för att njuta av snön några minuter, det var stora dottern som tog ut honom när jag hade åkt till kyrkan, inget som jag skulle ha gjort, men men...
Nu har det slutat att snöa, det återstår att se om det snöar mer under natten,
barnen kanske inte kommer till skolan om skolbussen inte vågar sig ut på morgonen...
inga dubbdäck här inte, och inte heller några bävernylon-överaller, utom några jag har i förrådet,

Yes indeed, just home from the church where my 9yr old daughter was singing carols with her class and schoolmates; it started to snow just before we left, which delighted the children but caused my Swede a bit of stress, I'm the rally-driver in the family, but I can't drive now for about another 5 weeks, after my operation in mid december.
Picture is of my son, out on the deck in the snow.
We'll have to wait and see if the kids get to school in the morning at all, the schoolbus may not venture out at all...
